Running a business without a strategic and tactical plan is like taking a trip without a road map or any knowledge of where you are going. The planning process allows for the owner to be proactive and see problems and inefficiencies before they become competitive liabilities. The plan should define what the business is trying to achieve (strategic) and how it will accomplish (tactical) those objectives. The best type of plan should include short-term (one year), intermediate (two to five years) and long-term goals (how to transition out of the business for the highest value).
